Speaker 2 00:00:38 Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Jenny. I'm quite a fan of your channel. Oh, perfect. Speaker 3 00:00:55 Any other questions. Speaker 4 00:01:02 Hi. Speaker 5 00:01:50 Thank you for being here. Yeah, meeting's over. Speaker 6 00:01:57 Can I sit down with you? I'm good. No, because it's just Eric. Speaker 1 00:02:04 It looked like I was struggling here. Speaker 5 00:02:32 It's discouraging to walk over there. Speaker 1 00:02:44 Right. Speaker 5 00:02:48 Okay, cool. You want to play. Speaker 3 00:02:54 That's great. You guys ready? Yes. Thank you. Speaker 7 00:03:18 So I just signed up Eric on my own for the shadow day and it was pretty much Eric and the whole in the whole my eighth grader and like. and it was on a day that there might be everybody off the day so no I you're not well you know. Speaker 6 00:03:46 I mean it's totally fair you don't want to be cut off guard but yeah yeah it's okay. Speaker 3 00:03:56 it's like when you read about this in the middle of this before you didn't start as early as that before, Did you have to take the date before they graduate. Speaker 7 00:04:05 Oh, I guess. I don't even remember. I'm like, this is, I hate this. Sorry. So, like, I'm trying, I've been doing a lot more of it, and I'm trying to make it as painless as possible for him. And so it's like, just go and see the schools and be done. You know, like, I don't know. There's not much to choose from. Yeah, that's why I was like, I feel like I just want to kind of know where that is. So, yeah, what other schools are you guys looking at? Speaker 7 00:04:35 I don't know yet. Oh, okay. Yeah, we, like, we didn't even send, we won't be sending our kids to Fairmont Prep. Like, it's just out of the way. I haven't seen it yet. Have you guys seen it? I haven't seen it. Like, it's just, I think it's too, everything that I hear about it is, you know. You can go there for sports if you want to, but it's really intense academically and while we like the academic part for Fairmont, we're not looking to up it, you know, by any means. So, yeah, Fairmont Prep was not everyone's. We'll be looking at Servite too. Speaker 7 00:05:17 Yeah, yeah. Oh, you guys are going to love it. If they did a tour, this is a good starter for his age, but you guys would really like to see a tour of everybody, like somebody taking you through it. That was helpful for me to be a part of the tour. Sure, that was better. Because you kind of get to meet them. And they talk about their programs. If you take your husband down to the athletics downstairs, like where they have the... Speaker 7 00:05:53 The weight room, like, I'm sure the guy will be there, but he's like, every kid, every freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior that's in the weight room class together will be paired together in groups of four, and they have, like, a pre, like, set up, like, workout schedule for themselves individually on an iPad that they all, and then the seniors kind of hold the freshmen accountable. Like, and they kind of do guided weight, you know, workouts and whatnot. It's really incredible. Speaker 5 00:06:44 Hi, everybody. Welcome. Thank you guys so much for being here. The Academies of Orange Lutheran Sessions. So if you're kind of keeping track of where you are and what you're doing tonight, we're really grateful that you're here. My name is Jennifer Brenner, and I have the blessing and the privilege of being the department chair, for the Academies at Orange Lutheran. And all that means is I get to work with an amazing team of advisors, and serve in ways that help your students. I have one of our advisors here, Ms. Olivia Lagan. She is my co-partner in business. Also, Mrs. Lagan was our founder of . Speaker 5 00:07:16 So we're pretty excited to share about our academies today. And I just want to encourage you, if there's something that you don't quite hear tonight that you want to know more of, we are located in the 200 hallway. So if sometimes you're making your rounds, just keep walking. You'll end up in a, it's just a giant square. So we have many of our advisors and many of our student leaders are also over there. So I know they would be really excited to meet you. But let's start our night off with a word of prayer. If you'll join me. Scott, I thank you so much just for the honor and the privilege it is, Father, to come and gather tonight and be here at Orange Lutheran. Speaker 5 00:07:52 Father, I thank you for all the families that are here tonight as they are seeking out their journey for high school, Lord. I just pray that you would continue to work in and through them so they may find out exactly where they're supposed to be. And we are so grateful for this time together to share about being Lord and just all the things that we are doing to further your kingdom. We give all the glory to you, Lord, in everything that we do. In Jesus' name, amen. So again, welcome. We're super glad that you're here. My job tonight is just to introduce you to the academies and give you a little snapshot of what these... Speaker 5 00:08:26 Has anybody learned of the academies at Orange Lutheran? Do we know anything? Do you know anything? No, I won't put you on the spot because I'm going to say everything up here. Yes. So that's what I hope to do by the end. You all will raise your hand like, oh, now we know a little bit about the academies. To get started, we have five academies here in Orange Ridge. Oh, wow. Welcome to technology. We just roll with it. No problem. We're good to go. It works fabulously. And we'll be back in 30 seconds. There we are. Speaker 5 00:09:02 See, just like that. Okay. Thank you for your patience. We have five academies here at Orange Lutheran. an opportunity for students to really explore their passions and interests in an area that they might pursue a career or vocational calling for. You can see here we have the Arts and Humanities Academy, Business and Global Leadership, First Responders, Health Professions, and STEM Academy. The red boxes that you see underneath are areas of specialty called endorsements. So we have 12 different endorsements that we offer here and again I'll unpack that a little bit more. Speaker 5 00:09:34 as we get going here but you guys, I know you might be going, gosh, I don't know what I want to do. I'm just trying to figure out where I want to go to high school, right? And that's okay. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to get plugged in at Orange Lutheran, both from an academic lane and also an applied learning lane. So when we talk about our academies, these are the components of our program. We certainly have academic rigor high school core classes that are needed for graduation because you are going to high school, right, and you want to graduate. So we follow along with what are their four-year course plans for students. Speaker 5 00:10:07 We also have specific coursework that's related to the academy. So, for example, Mrs. Laban teaches a business and entrepreneurship class that's directly related to the students that are in the business academy. So each academy, each endorsement area has a set of coursework that aligns with that. I do want to say, though, we try to work really hard for our academies to be an add-in to a student's schedule, not an add-on. So all of the coursework that's listed here is in relationship to courses they could utilize towards graduation. So we want to make sure that we're not. Speaker 5 00:10:38 Overwhelming students. of all this additional piece to their coursework. We also have a career and workplace preparation course, which I'll talk a little bit more about. We do an academy showcase project. I would invite you to come back for that. It's April 28th at the end of our school year. It is one evening that is dedicated to showcasing all the projects and learning that our students have been doing and it's run by our students. So it's a showcase night. We'll be pushing out information to all of our schools, and we would love to have you come and see that and check it out. We also utilize a flexible learning format here. Speaker 5 00:11:10 It just means the design of how the classes are offered is flexible, so you'll learn that at Orange Beach when you're visiting more stations. Now there's a whole other element to our academy called applied learning and a huge component of that involves our work-based learning experience. So right now we have almost 20 of our students who are placed on campus in work-based learning environments with other faculty and staff and they have an opportunity to learn. those faculty and staff members about on-the-job training. We have leadership training development that we do with our students. Speaker 5 00:11:42 We also are out in industry field trips. Our program just went to Edwards Life Sciences for a field trip, and they got to learn about the most recent technology with heart valve replacement. And so they were looking at a lot of really cool things that they put their hands on and they became involved with, and that's just an example of an industry field trip. We have guest speakers that come in. Then we offer professional mentorships, working with people in professions that are related to our academies. And then we also have a community service and civic engagement aspect to our program. Speaker 5 00:12:15 One of the new things that we're starting is an extended learning component. So we have a robotics club on our campus right now, and our robotics club actually will be competing this year, as a robotics team. So that is part of our STEM Academy and three endorsement areas. And so they will be attending that and competing throughout the year. And then our performing arts department, participates in several master class conferences and dance and music and all sorts of things that are related at a conference level where students can go in and learn things. Speaker 5 00:12:45 from master teachers in the industry. And then we belong to national organizations as well related to the different academies. So that's exciting. Now to give you an idea, I know it's a lot of fine print. I don't expect you to read it. It's OK. You got a QR code you can scan. and you can read to your heart's desire. But I wanted to show you what you'll be looking at when you get there. These are three examples of what our course plan looks like. We work very closely with our counseling department, like I said, to make sure that students first are going to be focused on graduating. That's the priority, right? But then within the context of that, Speaker 5 00:13:17 each academy has required academic learning, that is part of that academy. And then we have recommended courses. A lot of times students will come in and say, well, we just don't know what to take for our electives. Like we're interested in things, but we just don't know. And so there's recommended courses that go along with that. And then, like I mentioned, the applied learning, which includes the workplace prep class, and then also the work-based learning. So you can see here, we capture really easily for you as a parent and students to see if I'm in the engineering endorsement within the STEM Academy, what classes do I need to be working towards in order. Speaker 5 00:13:49 to meet those academy requirements before I graduate? So AP Physics I, AP Physics C, Honors Engineering, AP Health A, B, or B.C. Those would be the four required classes. Throughout your high school. career that you would be working towards. So each academy, again, will set up those requirements. We do offer a first responders academy, which is for those interested in criminal justice and fire science. And so they work in partnership with Santa Ana College. We have a dual credit program that's being run through those academies. So we have a wide variety of ways in which students can. Speaker 5 00:14:19 earn their credits towards the academy. And again, this information and detail you can get online. Now I mentioned the workplace prep course. What does that entail and what is work-based learning? First of all, the rationale is research shows that a lot of students that are graduating now from college have technical skills to do the job, but what they're missing are those soft skills, right? Things like time management, flexibility, emotional intelligence. Those are really important factors. out in the workplace. We also are finding that students' conflict resolution, Speaker 5 00:14:51 right, with the wonderful use of technology, it often puts conflict resolution behind a text message or a Snapchat, and that is not necessarily, where we wanna be when we're trying to resolve conflict. So we walk our students through a method, it's known as the STAR method, on how to really address conflict, especially in the workplace. Our students also participate in a mock interview experience. They have workshops and simulations. They work through self-paced modules that they do, and this is for one semester of their junior and senior year that they take this course. Speaker 5 00:15:22 Then we also, like I mentioned, the work-based learning. That's where we're providing real-world training for our students, experience. It's one semester again. It's a flexible format. It's about 25 hours that we require in some sort of work-based learning. And that, again, is a huge flexible piece right now. So we can work with students to really lean into what their interests are and their passions are related to. And then that is also the place that we're teaching both technical and soft. So we have an in-the-field component and we have an in-the-classroom component. Speaker 5 00:15:55 And then who can apply? Some of you in the room are like, where do I apply already, Mrs. B? How do I do this? Well, if you are an enrolled Orange Lutheran student and you are in good standing, right, so coming in as a freshman, you would actually apply in December of that year. So December 1st through the 15th is a two week application period that we ask you to apply. We notify you of your status in January that helps with your course registration for your sophomore year. So students don't actually start the academy until their sophomore year. However, you can be taking courses your freshman year. That will apply. The other reason we do that is we want you to get used to high school life, right? There's a lot to adjust to. It's a lot to take on. I'm not sure how many of our 14 year olds are really thinking about the vocational calling or the career when they come in. They're more like, where am I going to eat for lunch? Right? You know, like those kind of things. So we want to make sure that we afford our students that freshman year to get adjusted. So that's why we say it starts. The academy membership begins in August each academic year. That would be August of their sophomore year. Speaker 5 00:16:53 Transfer students, I don't know, do I have any transfer students in the room? Maybe, okay, because they are allowed to apply a little bit longer in the year. And then just to keep in mind, because our academy program is robust and it does include a lot of different aspects to it, they can only be in one academy, right? So can they switch academies? Yes, up until their junior year. So if they come in their sophomore year and they're like, woo-hoo, like my daughter who thought she was going to love accounting and then she took an accounting class and she was in it the first day and said, I'm not doing accounting, Mom. Speaker 5 00:17:23 And I said, no problem. So love all the accountants in the room, by the way. But we want our students to have a little bit of flexibility. So we do offer that between sophomore and junior year that they can request to transfer to a different academy. And then just as a reminder, students cannot apply for their senior year. So we say this to our students, don't wait, right? Like get involved, become a part of this, because if you wait until just your senior year, we won't be able to accept your application. So we want our students involved sooner than that. How do we develop our leaders within our academy? Speaker 5 00:17:55 Each academy has a leadership council, so maybe some of you in the room, are any of my students involved in student leadership at their schools? Are you guys involved? Yeah, probably an ASB or something like that. A wonderful additional way to plug into a leadership position on a little bit smaller of a scale, right? So you would be leading your group of students that are within your academy and you would work very closely with the advisors. So we give lots of opportunity to develop leadership through those councils. We also, again, are out there working through leadership through our field trips. Speaker 5 00:18:27 and our guest speakers in terms of how we conduct ourselves right out in the community, communication, you know, when we're being introduced to someone, how is our eye contact, are we paying attention during the guest speaker, right? Those kinds of things that we give our students an opportunity to show their leadership skills. We do keep that in mind. And then probably one of the most important things, both of my daughters graduated from Orange Lutheran. They are alumni of Orange Lutheran, and so I speak to you both as a mom and as a leader. A sense of belonging is huge, right? Like, everybody wants to feel a sense of belonging, connectedness, and so that's one of the things that we are really prioritizing in our academies is that our students do feel that connection with other students who share their same passions and interests. Speaker 5 00:19:09 And then also, like, ways in which we can develop friendships, we can produce faith in action, we collaborate, we connect, we build a community. So, it's really important for our academies that we establish that sense of belonging. We do hold an all-academy August retreat. This was the first year we did it. I told Ms. Lavin I was hoping for 100 students to show up. We had almost 100% of our academy students show up. We had over 250 students show up that day. And that just speaks to them wanting to belong and wanting to be a part of something. It's a great day of getting to know each other, making new friends, especially it can be scary when you're first coming into high school, right? Like any school, you're like, gosh, who am I going to know? And this is just another way in which to be connected here at Orange Lutheran. And we have so much to offer. I watched my daughters truly go from just survival to pride. Speaker 5 00:19:57 because they became involved in things. So I would encourage you as you're considering Orange Lutheran, look at all the things that your students can become involved in. And this is just one of them. I'm short and sweet, so I want to make sure that I get you out and on your way. I just wanted to point out in the 200 hallway, we have our beautiful dance studio. But in that hallway, you will find several of our advisors and also our student leaders. So I would really encourage you to head over there and meet them. The QR code will take you to our website. It's specifically for the academies, and it explains in much more detail about our academies. Speaker 5 00:20:32 So, again, take a look. There are five total, lots of opportunities to grow and learn in a career interest and see where God is calling you, right? So thank you for being here. Ms. Layton and I will stay for a few minutes if you have questions for us. But otherwise, we wanted to say welcome to Orange Lutheran and welcome to the academy. So thank you. Have a great night. Speaker 7 00:21:04 Alright, we'll see you guys around, good luck tonight. Thanks, you too. We'll see you at 6.45 after lunch. Speaker 3 00:21:16 Alright, we'll see you too. Keep it real. Sorry, I was shocked. Wait, did I do something wrong here? No. She's the cleaner. I love you. That's good. I know who you are. I'm not. Well, there you go. It'll be like, I know who I am. No, this is good. This is a go-to for everything. We're going to walk around and stuff into the space. Speaker 3 00:21:59 Yeah, there's presentations. Make sure the A.C. is on. One in there. How long are your gloves on? We'll follow you to our station. Wow, there's a lot of people. The 612 looks weird, huh. Speaker 1 00:22:22 Yeah. Left or straight? I like that. It's a problem. Hockey? Speaker 1 00:23:24 Wait a second, we may need to talk to you for a minute. Thank you. Stickers, candy, if you're hungry. I want to ruin your dinner. Here you go. Speaker 3 00:23:57 Now, who's that. Speaker 7 00:24:00 Ben. One of them. His name is spelled like Ethan, but it might be a different person. Speaker 2 00:24:16 Hey. How are you? Hi. Speaker 3 00:24:23 How are you? You don't want to talk to me. Oh, you are? Yeah. What's up, buddy? Good to see you. The other weekend of the tournament. Yes. Oh, yes. Speaker 6 00:24:33 Oh, it's all right. Hold on. I got to figure out what we're doing. It gets busy. One second. Speaker 6 00:25:09 I mean, I have phones on my channel. Because I'm looking. Speaker 3 00:25:14 I'm not. You want me to look at your whole paper. Speaker 7 00:25:54 I guess this is where they, like, brought it. Okay. So, funny, so taking Eric into this gym, so the K1 is definitely not at its best right now, you know, and the flies are everywhere. Eric's like, we're going to go to this hospital. Speaker 7 00:26:31 Huh? I just want to take a break. Speaker 7 00:27:23 Yeah, I want to say that Cervite won last, I don't know, no, no, so yeah, I was like, no. Speaker 6 00:27:41 wait, yeah, they won last year, Cervite won, I don't know, so, I don't, I don't, I'm going to go walk downstairs now. Speaker 6 00:28:14 There's numbers. Speaker 1 00:28:19 Let me get that. We are going Wednesday to watch this. Speaker 7 00:28:50 Pretty serious. They're serious inside. I know I did it. Thank you. Speaker 3 00:29:30 We have to beat number 25 on this. Yes. Oh. Speaker 2 00:29:39 Is that really. Speaker 6 00:29:45 Or are we going? Yeah, team room. Yeah, soccer. Speaker 3 00:29:51 I can get over here. I know. Or no. Speaker 1 00:29:60 We should go fast. Last one. Speaker 2 00:30:20 Hi guys. When people tell me that I'm always a little nervous, it could be good or bad. It could be good or bad. Speaker 1 00:30:36 Yeah, I think it's so fun. Speaker 8 00:31:47 And then you're going to make a right, and it'll be off. Speaker 7 00:31:52 Okay, got it. Thank you. Speaker 1 00:31:60 Okay. Thank you. Soccer? Welcome. Hello. Thank you. Speaker 1 00:32:31 That's all. Speaker 9 00:33:10 All right, so let's just, you guys want to get started? Let's get started. My name's Coach Mike. I'm the director of soccer here at Orange Lutheran. And this is my assistant coach, Kostan Kuklades. So his entire family has come to Oulu. He only came here for six months, though, because he got kicked out. I'm just kidding. He went to Europe to play professional soccer for seven years. So we forgive him for not being here through Orange Lutheran, because he was in Germany, England, and Greece playing professionally. But came back. Started his own construction company, and then obviously had some flexible hours and still coaches with us. Speaker 9 00:33:43 So, you know, as eighth graders coming into your freshman year, Coach Costa was the freshman coach for the last four years, right? And so a funny story about that is when I first got to Orange Lutheran, I talked to the football coach and the baseball coach, and I said, hey, what do I need to know about Olu and his athletics here? Because the soccer team before was awful, like 0-18, like winless, couldn't even compete in the Trinity League, right? And so they brought us in to change that, and so in asking and talking to a lot of the coaches here, they said the most important thing is to have an amazing freshman coach. Speaker 9 00:34:14 And so I had to tell him, I was like, he was going to be my right-hand guy on varsity, and I was like, you're coaching freshmen. But he did a great job. So he's coached every single player in this program except two, right? Three, Caleb, Temo, and Joaquin. They went straight to varsity from day one, but other than that, every player has played for him at some point. So it's a really good introduction to what Olu means. I mean, his whole family came through here. Like, it's, you know, their Lancers for life. So now he's up with me on varsity, and so we just got... A young man who is a college coach, he's a club coach, but he's also a teacher here. Speaker 9 00:34:48 He's a student teaching here, so he's on campus every day, which is a fantastic luxury to have. And so he's our new freshman coach. He coached with us last year. He knows what Orange League is about. But he's an amazing teacher, and he's just a great guy, and he's super patient. So it's like he's the perfect freshman coach. I'm super excited about that. But I'm also excited to talk about our girls' program, our boys' program, how we work and partner together, and a little bit of an overview on Lancer soccer. So just to kind of show you what's happened over the last couple of years, for boys we made the 2023 Division IV championship, and we won, fortunately, Speaker 9 00:35:22 and then made the state regional championship and won that. And then the following year did the same thing in Division I but lost both, unfortunately. So it's been a couple good years. And so you can see for boys' soccer kind of how we structure it. I'm the director of soccer and the boys' head coach, right? And then I have a head assistant coach, which is Kosa. And then all of those people underneath, you can see. the names as well. And so one of the unique things we also have is an academic advisor. So our academic advisor is a teacher that's on campus that does grade checks, that helps with homework, Speaker 9 00:35:53 that facilitates tutoring. We have it for both boys and girls soccer. And we just wanna make sure that you guys have a partner in the academic journey, right? Because that's a big part of what they do here. And so I wanna make sure that if you as parents have academic specific questions, I'm not giving you wrong information, right? So I give you a teacher that you have access to through our messaging app, ParentSquare and StudentSquare, where you can get updates on their, you'll have their grades, you'll have all that stuff. But if you need updates or need to communicate that you're gonna miss because you're going on vacation or that all this, that goes through her. Speaker 9 00:36:23 and she helps liaison to all the teachers. The teachers know like they're getting their work, they're staying on top of things. And so we're very fortunate. We had 3.7 GPA this last year, over 85 boys. That's really good. And that's all because of her, she's amazing. And so for our girls program, right? Our girls program just went through a huge transition. Our former coach, coach left and went to college. Right? As a coach. And then I took over both programs. And so I hired a girls head coach, Luis Segovia. He's a great head coach. He's brought in not only some new life and some new ways of playing, but he's bringing in more girls, right? Speaker 9 00:37:02 And so our girls' program is, if it was stock, it is going through the roof right now. I'm super excited about it. Char Kamansky is a junior on our soccer team, and she just committed to SMU, Southern Methodist University. So we're very excited for you, Char. But she's going to be a returning senior this next year, and the expectations are through the roof. So we play in the Trinity League, which a few of you will know about. I'll talk about that later. But just to kind of go over the girls' program as well, right? Our girls' head coach, Luis Segovia, hired his wife, Monique, who is awesome. Speaker 9 00:37:35 She played in the Mexican national team. She coaches club. And then our program advisor and coach, so it's a little different than an academic advisor. We have an academic advisor that's a teacher that works, but then our program advisor is Ramon Reed. And so he's like grandpa. He's just the nicest guy. He's at every level of game. He goes to the freshman game. He goes to the JV games because he creates these relationships with the players that just are amazing. They are so unique. awesome and it's you should follow him on social media I mean he's all over the. Speaker 9 00:38:05 place like going to college games going to pro games like resourcing for these young ladies so that when it comes to these college decisions and what they're gonna do with the rest of their life he's an advocate for them so he's a huge asset to our girls program just because everybody knows him all across the country and he's just helping the girls get better opportunities so and then you can see we've got all of our other coaches as well so when it comes to our program we kind of four main aspects of Lancer soccer for boys and girls we've got competitive excellence right so we talked about the Trinity League a little. Speaker 9 00:38:36 bit the Trinity League is the best high school athletics league in the country hands down right if you follow high school football the all the top teams and literally the country play in one week and it's wild to have to compete with that right so in soccer it's the same thing like J Sarah won an undefeated national championship last year they're number one in the country the year before that modern day one opened the year before that service I want it the year before that we would so in one year we actually had, three training league teams make CIF championship games. We were one of them, we were at a different level, Speaker 9 00:39:07 and the other two, Modern Day and JSA, were playing for the final. It's super competitive, and we played Cervak twice, in the CIF championship the following year. So the training league is so competitive that, What the school has done to, you know, continue to be competitive is to put resources into it, right? If you see our team room, like, this room's amazing. Our weight room is amazing. Our training room is amazing. Like, you have these resources, right, to support the students because it's a big commitment. And so when you play boys and girls soccer, you're like, you're a Lancer year-round. Not that you're training year-round, but you're representing more than just yourself, right? Speaker 9 00:39:40 Like, you have to carry yourself in a certain way. We have to be very selective about who we allow in the program. But if you do those things, you're going to have a lot of fun, first of all, right? But then you're also going to have a lot of opportunity. So we talked about the best. Being in the training league just gets eyes on you regardless. Playing in the best of the West tournament for our girls team, they go and play all the top teams in Southern California play in this tournament, and we're in it, right? And so it's one of those things where they get to see, you know, who the best teams are and can they compete. Same thing with the SoCal College Showcase for our boys team. Speaker 9 00:40:10 So at Chapman University, we take over the stadium. We have four days, and we have live streaming, college coaches, teams. this year. We played a team from Arizona, a team from NorCal, a team from San Diego. It's just a wonderful opportunity for us to get exposure for the student athletes because playing in a training league school, it brings eyes on you and then it gives you opportunities to do what you want to do at the next level. We also talked about academic development, right? We have our academic advisors that are helping them with all of their academic needs. So as parents, right, please don't call me a bad. Speaker 9 00:40:45 academic. I don't know, right? I'm not a teacher, but we have the best teacher, Mrs. Eswine, who's for boys soccer, was teacher of the year at Orange Lutheran last year. And then our girls academic advisor, Mrs. Reyes, is in her second or third year of teaching here. She's amazing as well. Just super nice people that really care for the students and their academic development. Then we talk about athletic development, right? Once you leave here, go check out the weigh room, go check out the athletic training room. For both boys and girls soccer on our field, that turf is the nicest. Turf you're ever going to be on. It's the same turf in Soho. Speaker 9 00:41:17 stadium, same turf in Dallas Cowboy Stadium. It's three years old. We maintain it. I coached college soccer for 15 years. Never played on a better turf field than what we have here. So it's super unique, right? That was the investment that the school made when we took over soccer. When we first got here, the field was unplayable. It was awful. There was holes in it. It was terrible. They cleared it all out. They got us a brand new field, right, to prove that they do care about this sport on campus. And it's shown through our facilities, full-time coaches, right? Opportunities the students get. There's Char right there. There's. Speaker 9 00:41:49 Ashton Miles. So Ashton Miles signed straight out of high school from Orange Lutheran. He just went straight to OCSE, and now he's a full-time player for them. Artie Markey just signed for Pepperdine. She's in her freshman year this year, I think. her first place in the WCC right now. Macy Tuololo-Sega, she was just at the U-17 World Cup in Samoa, representing her country, her family's country of origin. Really, she's an amazing young lady. Hayden Schneider, he committed to Point Loma, one of my first years here. Xavier Alcantara went to UNC Asheville. But we could, I mean, I don't have a slide big enough. Speaker 9 00:42:20 to put all of our college opportunities in the last few years. So it's just something that we want to advise the kids through. So, you know, we wanna use athletics, so that when they leave here and they go to college and they're done with college, right, they can look back as an orange losing lancer and be proud about that. And utilize that through their team efforts, their struggles, all the things they go through here, we want them to go to college and be like, okay, I'm prepared. And then when they go to high school, right, when they go to high school, when they go after college, they're gonna be prepared for that, too, here, in a controlled environment, in a faith-based school, Speaker 9 00:42:50 which is super unique. So if you're interested, Come to our ID clinics, right? These are opportunities for you to meet students that might be coming to Olu, people that you might recognize from the club soccer field or from your school that you didn't know, right? And then that creates the funnel of going into the end of your application process, then into summertime when we'll have camps and practices and all kinds of opportunities for you to meet the other people coming in. And then when school starts, right, you'll be in conditioning class every other day, right? Speaker 9 00:43:21 Doing weightlifting, speed and agility, sprint work. It's really awesome for development. So that's like one of the cool things about soccer is we don't cut people because the person that you are when you're 13 or 14 coming into high school is not gonna be the same person you are in two or three years. So like we wanna see that growth and that journey. And then if you get to the point where you choose to do some of the other amazing things at Olu, like that's awesome, right? You've found your path. But we just wanna be the catalyst to that. So if you get into the soccer program and you're like, I don't know what to do, like just start working out and start playing soccer and get on a team, right? Speaker 9 00:43:52 And then once you get that kind of momentum going for you, start to figure out, you'll feel more confident about yourself going through your high school experience. So that's what our soccer programs provide, right? And then we've got our varsity team, which competes at a national, national level, right? I think one year we started at the 20th in the country, right? Didn't finish that way, but, you know, it's a competitive, atmosphere where the kids are pushing each other. So that's the one great thing. That's why I'm so excited about the girls program is because there's so many good girls right now that are going to be finishing their high school career in such a positive way. Like. Speaker 9 00:44:24 she just came in because I told her we were going to be good, right? And all of a sudden, I'm not the coach, right? I got somebody who's a better girls coach than me to take the program over and he's done an awesome job in hiring that side of the program. And so that's where you get a chance to meet all these people that I've talked about and kind of see it in action. And then if you're still interested in it, right, you can keep going down the process. It's a no risk kind of investment to be able to get a chance to look at all the soccer. So are there any questions or anything before we finish up? So this is my contact info, if you guys have questions or you want to schedule a tour, or a shadow day, or you want to come on campus and watch a practice or a game, I'm also the associate director of admissions, so within CIF rules, that's all legal. Other schools that do that don't do it legally, but that's my job, right, is to be an admissions person and then also help grow our soccer team. Speaker 9 00:45:16 Any questions? I appreciate you guys being here tonight. I'm glad it was a smaller room. Some years it was too big, right? This is nice when I can make it nicer. All good? All right, thank you guys. If you want a stress ball, come on up, we've got some soccer building stress balls. I need one of those. You got a lot of stress balls. Speaker 4 00:45:38 I'll take one. Speaker 7 00:45:50 Okay. Speaker 3 00:45:57 Please. . Speaker 7 00:46:48 For sure, I'll make sure it comes to that component. Yeah, I was wondering about that, it was like... Speaker 9 00:46:53 Yeah, no one looked at it. Okay, sounds good. It's not like a trial by any means, it's more of just a... We just want to get to know them, see them play. There's some other kids, I think, that Kevin, as far as I know, and Eric have recommended in this class, that are coming from Shrekers too. Yep, absolutely. Speaker 4 00:47:08 Yeah, Ace, because he was on the younger team. Because I know that three of the kids on his team, or the kids on his team... Speaker 6 00:47:15 Preston, Eric, and Daniel, I think. Yeah, so... But, we'll head out. Great to meet you. Great to meet you, too. Thank you, too. So, where do you go to, like... Speaker 1 00:47:30 You can point. Speaker 4 00:47:45 You don't have to. He's like... Speaker 6 00:47:50 Oh, yes, you can look through there. You can look through there, all the hallways. Thank you. Speaker 1 00:48:17 Oh, yeah. Speaker 2 00:48:20 Good to see you guys. Speaker 6 00:48:22 Good to see you. Oh, yeah. Good to see you guys. Speaker 4 00:48:29 Good to see you. like a fitness routine for them, and I think the cooler part is that they pair them up with freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and senior's responsible for the freshmen's. Speaker 4 00:48:59 form, pushing themselves, stuff like that. Speaker 3 00:49:49 I know. Speaker 4 00:51:44 You know where it is. Speaker 6 00:51:47 Oh, and here's the other gym, by the way. This is a completely different gym. Speaker 1 00:52:12 This is a professional gym. This is amazing. Did I just hear? Oh. What. Speaker 6 00:54:07 We're looking for number three, theology, so we just entered in. Speaker 7 00:55:05 Hi, I'm going for a second time because it wasn't enough the first time. So you have a child in? We have a child in eighth grade. Yeah, he doesn't live working on that, but where do you guys go, where do they go? So, they go to Fairmont Private, but this is important to us, actually, so, and it's. Speaker 7 00:55:37 kind of funny, we have, like, a lot of friends, right, who would say, who would love to be like, oh, go to, you know, don't worry, like, they're not really that Christian over, you know, they like to say that about the school, and so I just kind of wanted to get, like, a little bit more, right, a little bit more of a foundation, because it is important to us, like, we're considering also Servite, too, even though we are Christian, so. Well, we do, so, fresh, so, this is the breakdown of classes. Sorry, that came out, like, swinging, but it's, like, it kind of makes me, like, want. Speaker 7 00:56:10 to, like, spit that out, and I'm like, like, let's talk about it. We should talk to you the same way. Speaker 8 00:56:13 So. That's why you love them. Speaker 10 00:56:17 One of the many. Speaker 8 00:56:19 So for us, so freshman year, we kind of are taking everybody that's Mr. Curtis. I'll let you explain that. Speaker 10 00:56:24 So I get the wide spectrum of kids. I get kids who have been in Bible class their whole life, coming from a St. John's or a Salem, and they kind of feel like they know it all. And then we have kids who have literally never heard the name Jesus before. Right. And heard the word God. And so how do we have a discussion with that wide range of kids? That's my job. So all of freshman year is pretty much getting everyone to the point where they're comfortable having like a small group discussion or a long discussion together. Feeling like no one's left behind and feels like they can understand how to live on what they're taught. Speaker 10 00:56:55 Basically, my job is to put everyone on the same even playing field, so when they get to their sophomore and junior year and they dive in the New Testament and Old Testament, they're all on the same even playing field diving into the Word together, and these classes start to become very small group discussion-based, where they're now doing a lot of work before class, diving into the Word, doing their blogs, and then they come to class and discuss the Word. Speaker 8 00:57:19 Yeah, so for us, like, so junior year is my, that's my grandmother year, so for us, it is about, like, ask questions, like, because we do have a lot of kids that will come here and like, I'm only here, I'm only Christian because my parents are, right? And great, well, let's actually dig into the thing that you have said before that you believe or that you don't believe, because I would say you don't know what you don't know, so I'm okay with that being, you know, the thing that sometimes people hear is because I go, yeah, I want our kids asking questions. A dead faith is one that's not established, so if they're curious, they're challenging it, like that's what we want to see them do. Speaker 8 00:57:54 And then senior year, they get to kind of dig a little bit more into, either they do apologetics, so learning to defend the faith, or they can choose pluralistic society, which is acknowledging, yeah, you're going to be surrounded by people that don't believe the same thing as you. And so they get a little bit of apologetics, a little bit of world religions, a little bit of the Christian. But the cool thing is that now we do a thing called All In, which as a freshman, I'm sorry, you said it was your daughter. It's time. Okay, so he would be, oh, sorry. Speaker 8 00:58:31 But the cool thing we do now is that all freshmen their first two days of school they go to up to Forest Home and they get to have an experience that's just with their other freshmen classmates and then 70 of us faculty and staff that really will give in, here's what the Bible says, here's what we want you to know that our God loves you, our God cares about you, created and redeemed and beloved by God and that's how we're going to treat other people because this is what he says to. Speaker 8 00:59:02 view other people as and they get to experience kind of that mission aspect of our school. So hopefully that's not the reputation of the event. So I apologize. No, I don't feel bad at all. Speaker 7 00:59:14 We appreciate your honesty, you really do. Well our passion is like we chose Fairmont because we do like our kids be interacting with, You know, all different types of things and whatnot. And they will be in our classroom doing the same thing. So we just want to make sure, we want to, what we want is we want to, you know, we want to induct me into, you know, in our family, right? Obviously, the church that we go to and what not. And what I don't want is like a lukewarm, right? Speaker 7 00:59:45 Like, lukewarm environment. I want it to be, I want, you know, I want them to be passionate. And so, so yeah, good. That's what I love to hear. That's why we came and sought this out, just to kind of squeeze out. How long have you guys been teachers here for. Speaker 8 01:00:01 I've been here 19 years. Okay. 2.5 for me. Awesome. Speaker 10 01:00:04 I started in the middle of it. Speaker 8 01:00:06 I taught Mr. Travis. Where did you guys go to school? Where did you guys go to college? He went to, he was one of my students. What about university? I went, I'm from the Midwest originally. I went to Concordia in Nebraska and then I got my master's. Leviticus? Concordia Irvine. Nothing more about that! Okay, Concordia. Alright, great. Why Leviticus? Because I really love the Old Testament and I felt like it's a book that we treat like it doesn't matter. Speaker 8 01:00:37 and I'm fascinated that there's all these rules like the regulations for things but it doesn't actually explain why. So my master's thesis was on the theological significance of the peace offering. So I went through and looked at every single time that the peace offering is given throughout the entire Old Testament to try to understand why are God's people giving the peace offering. And then it's really cool because in the... In Luke chapter 1, when baby Jesus is brought into the temple and Simeon sees him, Speaker 8 01:01:09 we say that the translation we say is, Simeon says, Behold, my eyes have seen thy salvation. But if you do the transliteration from Hebrew to Greek, he actually says, Behold, my eyes have seen the peace offering. And so the two reasons you give a peace offering are to celebrate God's provisions, and after something horrendous has happened where God's people have created division, because the peace offering is the only one that a lay Israelite got to eat. And so you eat it as a way to, you have to have been atoned for your sins, Speaker 8 01:01:40 to be forgiven for what you've done, but you're eating what the people eat. And so the idea that Simeon would say of Jesus, he is the peace offering, he is the one that has brought us both an act of celebration and whether it was related to have peace with one another. It only took me a year to figure that out. Speaker 4 01:01:57 So is the idea there that... Because he's now with us, right? Jesus came to be with us and be part of that instead of essentially the sacrificial lamb. So we're going to call it the offering right now because he's part of us. Speaker 8 01:02:10 Yeah, I mean, I'm going to go ahead. I mean, if I'm really going to go, I'm going to say that because our God transcends time and space that perhaps even the meals that they're eating in the Old Testament, if God exists outside of time, perhaps they will also partake in the offering. But! That's my ancient Near East cosmic nerdy-ness that I like to do. No, no, no, it's cool. It's good. Speaker 4 01:02:32 I just convinced somebody to go through the Bible with me in a year. Oh, cool. Speaker 8 01:02:36 Are you in Leviticus and you want to hate yourself. Speaker 4 01:02:38 Well, I was like, first he was like, well, I'd rather just read it. And I'm like, well, if you're going to do that, that's fine. Skip Leviticus. No! You jerk. Hey, look, I think. Speaker 3 01:02:49 This is meant to be. I'm glad that we had this conversation. No, I totally. I wouldn't push it. Speaker 4 01:02:54 I think there's a lot of stuff in Leviticus that you need to be able to appreciate. Come back to it. Will you come back? I don't skip Leviticus. Will you come back with your friend, though? You know. Absolutely. Because it's Easter Day of Atonement. No, no, no, my process there is going through the Bible is a chore in and of itself, especially when you're preaching. It's hard. Speaker 8 01:03:29 Okay, so now your kid needs to go here, and then they get to have a meet-and-greet, and then you get to talk to them, and then I'll make your kid talk to your friend. Okay, thank you so much. All right, well, it's nice to meet you guys. Speaker 7 01:03:41 Hi, we didn't mean to be self-consuming. No, no, this is great. What was your name again? Ashley. Speaker 3 01:03:47 Ashley, Sarah, and you? I didn't mean to set up that environment. No, no, no. I'm like, and I kind of, yes, sir. You don't, don't be wrong. Speaker 8 01:03:53 No, no, no. I hope you don't feel that way. I actually don't. Ashley, not at all. These are people for you. I love. No, I'm all, like, cut to it. Don't fluff it. That's why I like Leviticus. Speaker 10 01:04:06 I'll actually kick you back to Sarah. I actually appreciate, like, I love that our school, for example, doesn't make students sign these statements. I love that we get kids from her. Speaker 7 01:04:14 I don't hate it. Like, I don't hate it. So here's the thing. I don't mind, like, for the same reason that we send our kids to you. Fair enough, yeah. Fairmont, like I don't hate it for that. I love that for that reason. I think that if we're gonna be a Christian-based school, we're gonna be a Christian-based school and we're not gonna skirt around it either, it's something we have an opportunity to talk. That's cool. Speaker 6 01:04:35 Sorry, I coached this thing with some of you. No, you're fine, you're good, you're good. How are you guys? Nice to see you. I'm gonna see you guys. Coach Travis. Well, we'll let you guys talk a little bit more. Yeah, thank you. Thank you, Ashley. Speaker 7 01:04:43 Huh? I got this one. Alright, thank you. I'm glad that we did that. I don't know if I, I wasn't expecting Sarah, but I'm like, good, how are you doing? Good. Speaker 7 01:05:17 Like, I don't know, just obviously, I'll just do circles, not everything. Well, it seems like, at some point, we've already seen this one. Speaker 3 01:05:32 I'm like, right, so, you know, from the next point, it's really about, right, right, so. X that we know. Speaker 2 01:05:59 Yeah. That would be a lot of mercy, especially for your athletes. Speaker 4 01:06:03 By the way, I don't think it's. By the way. Speaker 7 01:06:16 Thank you. Speaker 4 01:06:24 I think that's going to be the answer. Good night. Thank you. It's going to be the answer from anybody. I was actually going to, what I was going to say before they came up was like, so, you. Speaker 4 01:06:57 know, I, I grew up thinking I was a Christian, not understanding, like, how do you, because I'm not, honestly, I was more bothered by her, or, not the right word, but I, I don't know where it's from. It was parked right over here somewhere, I think. Um, yeah, I don't know that I was as comfortable with her as a person, um, answer that I thought. Speaker 4 01:07:31 it would be. Um, so I'm in, and it was more the, Hey, let me be a nerd. And let me go into, it's like, I don't, you know, I don't like, you know, I was with you. I was like, Oh, I never looked at it that way. I'm going to have to research that. I see your point. And it's like, and then when you went there, I was like, that's a, no, she was like, that's a leap, you know? And so it's like, now I'm going to, now I have to process to, to, to go in my out and. Speaker 1 01:07:59 my, and, but it, but to be fair. Speaker 4 01:08:15 they're not catholic you know um so we're not like i'm not making a this is mine so here's the thing, well let me let me just say this last thing their stance on theology is not going to make or break the school right the question is you know the question is like what is going to produce, what is going to bring out the the most character from our son right you know um do i want him to. Speaker 4 01:08:54 have a passion for theology absolutely right um you know um i i like the hardest part is is that. Speaker 7 01:09:16 Honestly, this school stresses me out. Like, all I hear is money every time they talk, you know. Speaker 4 01:09:28 It says we have to keep on going that way, so... Speaker 7 01:09:33 But, you know, like, and like, there's nothing so wildly impressive about this school other than the fact that it's a, you know, a really nice school that seems to have a lot of good things, you know? Like, it's a very good option for a lot of people who do not want to put their kids in public school you know, with a Christian base, like, tone to it. Speaker 4 01:09:57 And if you want to go to sports, it sounds like that's... Speaker 7 01:10:00 They have very well-developed programs for sports, and they have very well-developed, like, programs for, like, the other, like I said, if I'm thinking about Matthew, like, Matthew should go to a school like this. They have... very they are very programs based they have approved to make sure that you are going to be successfully transitioning through high school and into whatever your next like assimilate them for. Speaker 7 01:10:41 eric he will come here and he will have will not just have a whole bunch of friends like i'll be like dad you know now is it about eric's friends no do i want him being consumed and so overwhelmed with like high school where he's trying to start over where he's having to start over again and make new friendships and whatnot even though sir right does a good job trying to. Speaker 7 01:11:12 Wait, what? Has he said that? What? I'll be like, Dad? Yeah. He brought that up the other day. Yeah, I didn't make that up. Speaker 4 01:11:23 No, I didn't think you made that up. My question wasn't like, hey, is that a true statement? My question was, are you channeling Eric, or did he really say that. Speaker 7 01:11:34 Oh, no, no, he said that. Speaker 4 01:11:35 Because I can see him saying that. No, he said that. And so, you know what's funny is my older friends are the ones that got me in a lot of trouble. Speaker 7 01:11:43 But, you know, socially, Eric has always struggled, right? So the idea of coming in and already kind of feeling special, you know, and feeling like he has that connection, and feeling special with having his best friend there, and having those connections, you know, and, like, the captain of his team, so all these things that make him special, like... I know that, like, I don't like, I'll be honest, I like Cervite. Speaker 7 01:12:25 I like Cervite, what Cervite is about. What do you think the biggest question is? I'm excited to kind of think, and I can't say that, but, you know, what's better to go to a school that kind of, like, has, like, that brushes over, that brushes over, like, you know, like, gets really into the weeds, but it's just not that, like, Speaker 7 01:12:58 but that, those are not, like I said, I value, like, Cervite, I hate the fact that it's not going to be apples to apples, because I'm going to set us up with a tour, and you'll, like, the tour is... the tour is very good at Servite you know over here the tour is it they're just so different, over here it's like you have a kid your kid is going to fit into any of these programs right over at Servite it's like your son is going to grow up and be a man here and we're going to. Speaker 4 01:13:30 make sure that we raise him right and so it's so different right that's the reason why i started i know i know and as i'm sitting here looking at it i'm going i know i can i can see some cool things that you guys have i like the academies right right um unfortunately eric's gonna pick you know the stem route or something like that and i'm gonna have to talk him into business or, you know um why wouldn't you want him doing stem. Speaker 4 01:14:00 i don't have a problem with him doing stem provided that he is committed to his academics. No. I don't think I would have been happy doing it, but I would have chosen STEM. I did choose STEM at his age. Speaker 7 01:14:22 You constantly call him, like, a little engineer, you know? Isn't that STEM. Speaker 4 01:14:26 Mm-hmm. Speaker 7 01:14:27 I would have thought, you know, like... Speaker 4 01:14:30 So, I'm not going to, look, I'm not going to talk him into one way or the other. I'm going to make sure that he's looking at the entire picture. Speaker 7 01:14:40 I'm getting the feeling that you actually don't even have to go into an academy at all. No. I thought so. Speaker 4 01:14:45 You probably don't, but I think that they're helpful. Speaker 7 01:14:48 Right. I do, too. Speaker 4 01:14:51 But, again, I'm just going to, like, the whole thing I'm looking at and going, well, how are you going to partner with me? You know, because, honestly, I don't care. From a career... I'm getting the sports either way, no matter what, you know, Olu or Servite, Eric's good on sports. Speaker 7 01:15:14 I mean, the sports don't matter to me, I'm a little bit anxious about Servite, because Servite's like, he doesn't know anybody, we don't have any connections, like he may not be, like what if he gets in, doesn't even make the team at Servite, you know, and then he resents us. I know that sounds horrible, I know that sounds horrible, I don't, like he'll get over it, but it's like, but then it's, I just don't like the idea of him being like, like you, you know, like you made me go to this. Speaker 7 01:15:48 school, and I'm not even getting to do what I love with my friends, you know. Speaker 4 01:15:53 Good question, that bothers me, that I hadn't considered. No, thank you. [AI_SUMMARY] An 8th-grade student, Eric, and his parents are evaluating high school options, primarily between Orange Lutheran and Servite. They prioritize a school that fosters character development and social connections. Servite offers strong character formation but lacks Eric's existing friendships, raising concerns about sports team inclusion. Orange Lutheran provides a structured environment with established social ties for Eric, including his best friend. The family is also considering the academic and athletic programs at both schools, with a focus on Eric's interests in STEM and sports opportunities. They plan to visit both schools for further evaluation.
